MCA's Latin program begins in 4th grade, providing students with systematic instruction in Latin vocabulary, grammar, and Roman culture. This program strengthens English vocabulary development, enhances grammatical understanding, and builds analytical thinking skills.
What Students Learn
4th Grade:

- Basic vocabulary (100+ words)
- Simple noun cases (nominative and accusative)
- Roman culture and mythology connections
- English derivatives from Latin roots
5th Grade:
- Expanded vocabulary (200+ additional words)
- Present tense verb conjugations
- All noun cases introduction
- Roman history connections
- Translation of simple sentences
6th-8th Grade:
- Advanced vocabulary and grammar structures
- Reading of adapted Latin texts
- Systematic study of all verb tenses
- Cultural context of ancient Rome
- Translation of increasingly complex passages
How It Works
Latin instruction uses direct instruction for systematic teaching of vocabulary and grammar patterns, with explicit links between Latin and English vocabulary. Students engage in guided translation practice from Latin to English and English to Latin, while learning about Roman history and culture that connects to their Core Knowledge studies.
Why It Matters
Latin strengthens English vocabulary through root recognition—60% of English words have Latin origins.
